About GÉANT

GÉANT – at the heart of research and education networking

GÉANT is a fundamental element of Europe’s e infrastructure landscape, enabling scientific excellence, research, education and innovation through its pan European network. GÉANT develops, implements, and promotes advanced networks and associated e-infrastructure services to support open innovation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing among its members, partners, and the wider research and education networking community.

The GÉANT network interconnects 37+ National Research and Education Network (NREN) partners, making it the largest and most advanced research and education (R&E) network in the world, connecting more than 50 million users in 10,000 institutions across Europe and supporting all scientific disciplines.

Since its creation more than 25 years ago, the GÉANT network has continuously expanded and been upgraded to ensure that European researchers remain at the forefront of international and global collaboration. Today, 9,000 terabytes of data are transferred daily across the high bandwidth, high-speed and highly resilient GÉANT IP backbone, which operates at speeds of up to 1.6 Tbps and reaches 110 national networks worldwide.

Through its integrated catalogue of connectivity, collaboration and identity services, GÉANT offers its users highly reliable and unrestricted access to computing, analysis, storage, applications, and other digital resources. More than just an infrastructure for e-science, GÉANT is a positive example of European integration and collaboration, connecting Europe’s researchers, academics and students to each other, and linking them to over half the countries in the world.
